When was the last time you cleaned your child’s car seat? Have you just inherited a hand-me-down from your family? Did you know that your baby’s car seat is crawling with twice as many bacteria as a public toilet according to one study?
Not too many parents consciously think about the hygiene of their child’s car seats all the time. After all, they are crammed with life madness that makes them too busy to think. In fact, a majority of parents admit to only cleaning their car seats once a year! A study reveals that there are 147% more bacteria in vehicles with children than those without. That certainly highlights the importance of cleaning your car seats on a regular basis.
Here are 6 quick tips to help maintain your car seats:
1. Wipe immediately!
Keep baby wipes and microfiber cloths in your car handy. When an accidental spilling happens, pull over at once and attend to the mess immediately. The longer you wait, the harder it is to keep the stains out and mold may form.
Any vomit, urine, or liquid should be blotted dry as soon as possible.
2. Vacuum often.
Dust, food crumbs, hair, sand, and other substances can be collected either on the surface of the car seat or underneath its pads. Vacuum regularly to maintain clean and safe hygiene.
3. ALWAYS read your manufacturer’s manual before washing.
You can always learn about cleaning and maintenance recommendations from the manual, as well as how to disassemble and re-assemble the pads safely. Improper cleaning may result in damaging the fabrics or the protective elastic in your harness, endangering your child’s safety.
4. Avoid eating or drinking in the car!
Not to mention that doing so is a choking hazard, but food, juice, milk, and other substances that hide in seams, creases, and crevices are magnets for germs and bacteria. Sticky substances such as gum, chocolate, crayon, honey, and granola bars should be avoided at all costs unless you don’t mind them melted and getting stuck on your car seats. YUCK.
You may be surprised by what you can find underneath the pads!
5. Be careful when applying sunscreen and oil-based lotion.
Sunscreen, grease, and wax are some of the toughest stains to remove. It is best to apply them on your child out of the car seat.
Untreated snacks and crayons may melt into your seats!
6. Clean regularly.
